Chapter 17: Now or Never—Now and Forever

He leaned in and kissed her, his hands still wrapped around her waist.

“Thank you for telling me that,” he said. “I’m sure it wasn’t easy for you.”

“It wasn’t,” she agreed. “But, I’m glad I did. Ever since things started getting dangerous on the mission, since we started the off-ship investigations, I’ve had this desire to share that with you. I wanted to open up to you completely because… well, because…”

“Because what?” he asked, his brow furrowing.

“Because I know that we constantly put our lives at risk—that’s the nature of our jobs. I know that anything can happen in the blink of an eye. An ambush. An attack. I wanted to share all of that with you because I want to be completely open with you, vulnerable. I want… well, now I’m rambling,” she said, feeling her heart race in her chest. “I just don’t know how to say it…”

“I love you, too,” Minos said.

Her jaw hung open and her eyes went wide. A relieved sigh slipped past her lips. “I was afraid you would…”

“Want to take it slow?” he asked. He smiled. “I gave up on that a long time ago, Azura. It’s like I’ve always told you—I can’t resist you no matter how hard I try. I always knew there was something special about you, but I didn’t know what it was until tonight.”

He lifted his hand to her cheek, brushing aside a stray strand of dark hair that had tumbled into her face. Letting his eyes lock on hers, he continued.

“I always knew you were strong but I never knew how strong. I told you before that you inspire me. And, you do. You have suffered loss, grief, and the constant onslaught of everyone else’s pity. Yet, you still found a way to keep going. You found your own strength to keep going. You say it was me that helped you dig yourself out of that hole. It wasn’t, though. Azura, it was you—all you. You were the one that stood up to your Commander and convinced him to give you clearance for the mission; you were the one who decided you were ready to give yourself another chance.”

“It was because you were there to…”

“No,” he cut her off. “It wasn’t me being there that gave you strength. But, it was that strength that drew me to you.”

“Maybe we both had something to do with it,” she replied. “Did having you around give me strength, or did my strength keep you around? There’s no way of knowing for sure. And, it doesn’t really matter, I suppose.”

As she spoke, she moved her hands up his arms, finding his shoulders and letting her fingers graze over the scales that melted into his skin. A ripple of heat poured out of him as they both shuddered slightly from the rush of tingling energy that passed between them.

“It doesn’t matter because we’re here now,” she said softly. “Maybe we don’t know what it truly was that brought us together.
